On Five De nitions of Data Integrity 1 Ravi

چکیده
This paper compares ve deenitions of data integrity, and shows how they can be ordered in an increasingly restrictive sequence. The most general of these, due to Courtney and Ware 6], is based on the concept of expectation of data quality: data has integrity to the extent that its quality meets, or exceeds, the quality requirements that users expect of it. This deenition incorporates liveness requirements, whereas the others only address safety requirements. The second and third deenitions are both based on the ability to modify data. One of these, due to Sandhu and Jajodia 16], deenes the scope of integrity to be safeguards against the improper modiication of data. The other narrows the scope further to safeguards against the unauthorized modiication of data. This latter deenition has been popular in recent security criteria 4,10]. The fourth deenition discussed here is Biba's concept of integrity as one-directional information ow in a lattice 2]. We argue that Biba's deenition is more restrictive than the previous three, being the one in which unauthorized modiication is given a very speciic meaning. The fth and most restrictive deenition comes from the network arena and requires that the data not be modiied (or at least that any change should be detectable). The paper concludes with a discussion of how these deenitions relate to other work in the integrity arena.

This paper deals with learning rst-order logic rules from data lacking an explicit classi cation predicate. Consequently, the learned rules are not restricted to predicate de nitions as in supervised inductive logic programming. First-order logic o ers the ability to deal with structured, multi-relational knowledge. Possible applications include rst-order knowledge discovery, induction of integ...
متن کاملTowards Generating a Data Integrity Standard
The tremendous growth in size, complexity and value of the organizationÕs data resources has given rise to an urgent need for a data integrity standard that will provide a consensus de®nition, a common measure and a set of tools for evaluating the various models and mechanisms in this domain. This paper attempts to pave the way for such a data integrity standard. It discusses various de®nitions...
متن کاملVQBD: Visualizing, Querying, and Browsing Semistructured Data
The VQBD project addresses the following problem: What is the best way to explore an XML document of unknown structure and content? We focus on XML documents that are too large to browse in their entirety, even with the assistance of pretty-printing software (e.g., multi-megabyte or larger XML documents). In this context, we use the term data exploration to refer to the process by which a user ...
متن کاملPolyinstantiation Integrity in Multilevel Relations
Polyinstantiation integrity (PI) as de ned in the SeaView multilevel relational data model consists of a functional dependency component and a multivalued dependency component. We show that the latter component rules out many practically useful relations and is therefore unduly restrictive. This leads us to propose that PI be de ned to consist only of the functional dependency component. For th...
